India has moved up 35 places to become the 88th best country in the world to live, leaving behind nations like Russia and China, according to a survey. The rise has made India the second best place after Bhutan to live in the sub-continent, according to the 2010 Quality of Life Index, published by travel magazine International Living.

Overall, France topped the poll for the fifth consecutive year, followed by Australia, Switzerland, and Germany. The US lost four positions to end at seventh.

Sweden has been dubbed as the costliest country in the world to live by the index. In 2009, India was the fourth best country in South Asia after Bhutan, Maldives and Sri Lanka.

The index, published for the 30th year, ranks 194 nations in nine categories: cost of living, culture and leisure, economy, environment, freedom, health, infrastructure, safety and risk, and climate. India has not only improved its overall position in the tally, but has also gained around 25 points in the cost of living category.

This year the country got 65 points compared to 40 last year. “The figure relates to how much it will cost one to live in a style comparable to or better than the standard of living you”re likely enjoying in the US,” the magazine says.

Teen molester Haryana DGP SPS Rathore get bail today?

A Panchkula court will decide on Friday whether to give anticipatory bail to Ruchika’s tormentor former Haryana DGP SPS Rathore in connection with two fresh cases filed by her family.

On Thursday, the court had reserved the order on the bail till Friday.

The court had earlier given interim bail to Rathore till January 7 and asked the Haryana Government to reply to its notice on the two cases by then.

What could affect the outcome of the hearing on Rathore’s bail plea is the failure of the Haryana government to file its reply on Thursday to the court notice.

The court rapped the police saying, “The Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted seven days ago and this time is enough to collect evidence. But SIT has not been able to collect a single evidence against Rathore. You have senior officers in SIT, then why is there a delay?”

The judge also had some tough words for the public prosecutor when he asked for more time to file the government’s reply.

Jackson hit the headlines as much for his wacky ways as he did for his legendary music. Right from his shows, lifestyle to his appearance there is a story to unearth behind each. With Jackson’s death some of them may now remain a mystery forever. Take a look at some of Jackson’s most famous mystical tales.

Michael Jackson

Animals always played a very important role in Michael’s life. Bubbles, the chimp was probably his most celebrated pet. MJ had rescued Bubbles from a Texas cancer research clinic in 1985 when the chimpanzee was three years old. Bubbles slept in a crib in MJ’s bedroom and was the only one- human or animal- allowed to use Michael’s private bathroom.

Jackson was separated from his beloved Bubbles only after the birth of his son Prince Michael II. Bubbles had become aggressive and was moved to an animal sanctuary.MJ was believed to be very close to spiders. Yes you read it right- Spiders! In fact for the trial of one of his concert in the year 2002 Jacko came in limping and the reason he gave was that he had been bitten by one of his tarantulas at his ranch, Neverland, which was home to many rare spiders.

In fact it was also rumored that for his much awaited comeback concert, Jackson had plans to enter the stage with African elephants and panthers; and parrots and some rare birds were to fly behind him.

Michael Jackson was diagnosed in 1986 with vitiligo and lupus. In a 90-minute interview with Oprah Winfrey in February 1993, Jackson dismissed suggestions that he bleached his skin, admitting for the first time that he had the illness. It is also said that he started wearing his signature ’sequin glove’ to cover the vitiligo that had begun to appear. Some also said that Jackson slept in an oxygen chamber to prevent a horrible skin disease (not Vitiligo).

The one thing that constantly kept changing about MJ was his face. To begin with, he narrowed his nose slightly and shaped his eyebrows. Next came in a permanent eyeliner around his eyes and a lipstick! The late 80’s saw Jackson play with his nose again and he also got high cheek bones. Jackson’s looks kept changing and not many would know why?

There were also rumors that MJ had been allegedly taking female hormones to remove facial hair and keep his voice at a 12 year old boy pitch. He is also believed to have gotten rid of most of his nose to touch high musical notes while singing. This plastic surgery in fact cost Jacko dearly when he publicly dropped his nose!

Remembering the weird ways of Michael Jackson, he once dangled a 6 month old baby from the fifth floor of his hotel room in Berlin. Nothing and no one can probably now explain that incident.

Mystery shrouds Michael even in death as some say he was murdered and others claim it was a drug overdose. Some die-hard fans even go on to call MJ’s death a publicity stunt and that one day he will come back from the dead… moon-walking… and make the biggest comeback ever in history! Tejaswi Shekhawat, Yahoo! India News

Mumbai: Ignoring the lessons from Reeda Shaikh’s death due to H1N1 in Pune, city health authorities, on Friday, made a Thane family — who was trying get their hospitalised daughter’s throat swab samples tested — run around in circles. Health officials disregarded the fact that the girl’s father had returned from the US a week ago, and her referral had come from doctors of the wellknown Jupiter Hospital in Thane.
With his hospitalised sister’s throat swab sample in hand, 22-year-old Arun K dashed to Kasturba Hospital in Chinchpokli early on Friday, only to be turned back. Hospital authorities maintained that they only collected samples; he was directed to Haffkine Institute in Parel as he already had a sample. Arun’s sister, Asha (name changed) is a 16-year-old student in a Thane school. “My father returned from a trip to the US and Finland last week. Asha has been suffering from
cough and fever from almost a week. On Thursday, she complained of a severe stomach ache, and we admitted her to Jupiter Hospital in Thane,’’ said Arun.
When at Kasturba, Arun called up Haffkine Institute, which refused to accept the sample, as it had not been collected at a public hospital. The family got a discharge for Asha from Jupiter Hospital and sought admission in Thane Civil Hospital — only to be told that it was not accepting swine flu suspects. “When we went to Thane Civil Hospital, we were told that they did not have the facility to take a swab test and preserve the sample,’’ said Arun.
Jupiter Hospital had taken a swab and preserved it in a deep freezer. On Friday morning, Arun was sent to Kasturba Hospital with it. “Asha has been getting fever with cough, chills and weakness. She is the first case where we thought that taking the swab test would be better so as to rule out the possibility of swine flu. We had no idea that Kasturba Hospital and the Haffkine centre would not be taking samples from private hospitals,’’ said Dr Milind Thanekar, who was treating Asha at Jupiter Hospital.
Dr Umesh Aigal, medical superintendent of Kasturba Hospital, said, “It doesn’t make sense to take a sample from another hospital and then send it to Haffkine Institute. All the samples from other hospitals go directly to Haffkine.’’ Health officials admitted that samples from private hospitals were not being accepted. “We haven’t been accepting swab samples from private hospitals. We are only following the guidelines that the government has given us,’’ said Dr Abhay Chowdhary from Haffkine’s Institute.
The family was advised to take Asha to Kasturba Hospital, which is what they is planning to do on Saturday morning.
